I think this is a gobal problem for all of us. The crises of finances has become a definite struggle for all of us, to make ends meet. But pardon me! there are some who are going through life pretty fine with noting to worry about.

  • Concerned you bet - 15 years ago

You better believe it worries me. It also worries me that our prison in Cuba is going to be closed. Has the majority of the country gone crazy?? Remember 9/11. I sometimes think this nightmare could not get worse then I turn on the news to find out about the Secty. of State nominee and Clinton...guess we forgot about WhiteWater too... Oh the box with the paperwork we could not find for a year is in my closest...and Holder is a really sad representative of our legal system...he lets people who build bombs go. I feel like everyone thinks the best representatives of our country is in the worst people we can find have run the country. Makes us look like idiots.

Hi Haters .... we need to replace Obama with someone who is not a gutless, cowardly, corrupt, anti American, racist piece of shit like Obama without ANY doubt, undeniably is . David Duke and Obama are the same guy.

Nancy Pelosi is possessed by the kind of power that is most dangerous to this great nation. She needs to be removed!

The Congress has forgotten their basic sworn duty as elected officials FOR THE PEOPLE. They work for the people, not for their party. Unfortunately, most of Congress needs to be swept away, with new people put in who really have the concerns of the people of this Great Nation, on their hearts and minds. It appears most of Congress ARE INEPT. They can't fix what they have allowed to destroy our financial market. Where are the brains who can do what is right and prudent for this financial crisis??? Newt Gingrich has the answers!!! Is any one listening to him? Get rid of Poulson and Cox, who are ignorant power hungry thieves. They gave HORRIBLE advice to Bush.

  • MARY M - 16 years ago

I VOTED YES; HOWEVER, I REALLY AM NOT WORRIED. WE ARE A SOUND COUNTRY AND OUR BASIC INSTINCTS WILL NOT ALLOW US TO FAIL. I DO AGREE WITH DONALD TRUMP AND MR. GINGRICH THAT THEY SHOULD SUSPEND THE MARK TO MARKET AND SEE HOW THE MARKET REACTS. THESE MEN ARE MORE COMPETENT THEN THE PEOPLE PRESENTLY IN CHARGE. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THIS ELECTION. I TRULY CANNOT BELIEVE THE NEGATIVE VIBES THAT THE DEMOCRATS SPIN. THEY ARE SO ANGRY. IT IS LIKE WATCHING A CHILD IN A TEMPER TANTRUM. CONSERVATIVES WOULD NEVER BEHAVE IN THIS MANNER.
MY HOPE IS THAT JOHN MCCAIN WILL STICK TO POINT AND BECOME MORE LIKE MITT ROMNEY. BY THAT I MEAN CONFIDENT IN HIS CONVICTIONS AND BRING ELECTRICITY TO HIS NEXT DEBATE.

Newt knows what he is talking about ALL the time. Let's get his voice heard. I have emailed Greta's interview with him to 20 people. Please do the same. Also, let's start the ball rolling to get rid of Paulson. There is power in the people.

I am glad this bailout did not pass. Who is gonna bail out poor people like me who cannot afford these high gas and food prices. I do not get loans or buy a house I know I cant afford. What about another stimulus check to get the economy going again. Seems the poor people like myself are the ones who are always forgotten. Also, I hope John McCain is our next president. He needs to clean house alright, get rid of all those stupid democrats in congress who got us in this mess. As for Obama, I guess Oprah could give him his own t.v. show. I think he would be a good actor.

  • Lisa - 16 years ago

I am grateful for the 95 Dem and 133 Rep that refused to hand this problem off. It was a wise and responsible choice. Why hand that amount of money and responsibility over to an irresposible adminastration? It would of been so easy for congress to wash there hands of the problem and its solutions. These brave souls showed that they take there responsibility serious and are willing to work for the people of America. They showed they believe in Americans to handle there individual difficulties while our government takes the time it needs to truely work out a plan that will work.

  • GET OUT - 16 years ago

I don't think anyone should get bailed out. If you can't Make your house payment, GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE HOUSE .... IT IS NOT YOURS, it is the babks!!!! If you can work out a deal with them ... good ... If you can't work out a deal with the bank .... GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE HOUSE .... IT IS NOT YOURS

  • Scott Miller - 16 years ago

I dont think we should bail out anyone these banks were giving these bad loans pushing up the prices on houses.
They were selling houses for $500.0000.00-$600.0000.00 that were only worth $300.0000.00 they did recieve money at an intrest rate.
And they now have the houses back that are still Worth $300.0000.00 are these banks really broke?"I think not" Now they can sell them to people who can actually afford them !

  • Gill Bowman - 16 years ago

Subject: Said the congressman," I made this mess and I can cover it up, just give me the money and let me do my job!"

Congress has served it's members best interest for years (retirement, ins, raising their own salaries, miss using public trust, ...) securing a future for themselves while claiming to serve the American people; their self-serving votes ,for favors, allowed the export of America's productivity, undermining America's financial future.......but the Congressman's has secured his future, American's will pay him through retirement for doing nothing; Dollar for dollar how would that compare with executives of failing companies who get unearned bonuses.

  • A worried and confused citizen! - 16 years ago

Yes it worries me, I just have one question...How is it that we can spend Billions of dollars to rebuild another country after we destroy it, but CAN NOT spend 700 billion dollars to help our own country. I think we need to start worrying about us before anything else!!

    Just my opinion!!
    Thanks.

  • Becky Weamer - 16 years ago

I am glad that the bill did not go through, and if it means that people can't borrow money, so be it. That is what got us in trouble, is credit, credit credit. What ever happened to those people who don't buy things unless they can afford it without financing it. I am 70 years old, and I don't buy anything unless I pay cash, and just paid off my house. We need to change the mentality of people in this country. Perhaps this is a lesson for all. The only smart person I have heard is Newt Gingrich, and Dave Ramsey.

  • Patricia Deniau - 16 years ago

Having lived under the system Mr. Obama proposes, I can assure you without any doubt that even the liberals will be sorry. You can just write a monthly check for an addtional 30-35% in taxes by the time it's finished. This man is just outside the realm of reality. There appears to be a group of wealthy individuals pushing this inexperienced individual into office with the aid of the media who can see no fault in him. God help us if he succeeds.

  • Debbi - 16 years ago

Pelosi really stepped in it today. She should be ashamed of herself. She's more worried about how her party "looks" then she is about main street America.

I think that everyone needs to step back and look at the Republican plan before any more votes are taken. Not knowing the details I can't say it would be better, but we need to have a choice here. It is our money, afterall.

AT THE SADDLEBACK FORUM, don’t forget Obama’s “stuttering” around the question, “When does a baby get human rights?”

“Well, uh, you know, I think that whether you’re looking at it from a theological perspective or, uh, a scientific perspective, uh, answering that question with specificity, uh, you know, is, is, uh, ABOVE MY PAY GRADE.”

I'D RATHER HAVE A "VICE PRESIDENT" IN TRAINING (PALIN) THAN TO HAVE A "PRESIDENT" IN TRAINING (OBAMA). EXPERIENCE DOES MATTER --- I'M VOTING "TOP" OF THE TICKET (McCAIN).

OBAMA AND THE DNC WANT 20% OF THE BAILOUT MONEY TO GO TO ORGANIZATIONS LIKE "ACORN"! I SAY NO!

I'VE WORKED AND PAID TAXES ALL MY LIFE. I DON'T WANT MY TAX MONEY TO PAY SOMEONE ELSE'S MORTGAGE PAYMENT.

OBAMA AND AYERS WORKED TOGETHER ON ACORN. THEY COLLECTED MILLIONS! --- WHERE DID ALL THAT MONEY GO? WE NEED TO KNOW BEFORE NOVEMBER!

This is for David Fuller...David, no one did the math. It's only $425.00 per
person. If you'll send me your email, I'll forward my response to those who perpetuated this. No chastisement, only reality. We're not Socialists and
we should not be protecting Wall Street, only the banks that didn't cheat; and only to the degree that we loan them the money until they're either bought out or able to acquire the money by selling off assets.
There is something called "transparency" that we, as a nation, a business, a voter rely upon in the decision making process. Crooks avoid transparency and those who are trusting are abused. We are currently being abused by the legislators mentioned in all these emails. They are the Tyrants and we are their Slaves. The 10th amendment gives us the right to oust them. I'm ready if you are. Let's do it!!!! My husband and I LOVE NEWT GINGRICH!! He is a

    1) Nancy Pelosy - out!!! She is a crook and obstructor or justice! Should be in jail for not letting republicans do their job on Fanny Mae.

    2) The bill is a joke! The republicans offered a much better bill. It must be passed instead of this Polson plan (which wants to give 20billion dollars to organizations like Acorn and fat checks to corrupted CEOs and other outrageous spendings).

No wonder Obama says "present", he is in bed with the enemy. The Dems do not want to carry it alone, they would not want to take blame if anything goes wrong. The biggest wrong will be to elect Obama. Newt's the best, someone should listen to him.

  • Marila - 16 years ago

Obama has no original thoughts, must have prompts fed to him. He follows dictates of the Left, will destroy the American way of life as we know it. I was shocked at the total negatives on Blitzer CNN tonight toward McCain, Palin.
What about the vicious attacks on Palin who is more experienced than Obama. What about the stuffed ballot boxes in swing states? We need to require each vote be verified by Social Security number which in this age of technology can be checked instantly for fraud. Have Newt's plan be conveyed immediately to McCain and Palin. Have Bush fire the Sect'y of Treasury. Have the millions of dollars in severance and retirement packages be taken back from those CEOs and applied to the bailout package. Replace Pelosi whose prejudice disqualifies her to be an impartial bipartisan leader.

  • Todd Trimble - 16 years ago

No, the perceived financial crises does not worry me. Since the Government formed the FDIC to insure depositor's money, there has not been one penny lost by a depositor where the bank had FDIC insurance. I believe if this message had gotten out better there would not have been a run on WAMU. Mainstreet should not bail out Wallstreet---let the free market correct the crises. Congress should help with a workout that would benefit mainstreet such as lowering interest rates on mortgage loans, suspend mark to market accounting principles, and lowering the capital gains tax. There must be an investigation pertaining to FNMA, Freddie Mac, and Mortgage companies in regards to the irresponsible lending underwriting standards as well as the overreaction of the Secretary/Treasurer bailout and the dealings he had with Goldman Sacs representative.

worry won't stop or control this situation. Just wonder why these ego maniacs who would like to control 700 billion don't listen to other voices who seem to be able to explain the reasons why this came about and what to do to solve it. I believe there are other people with good judgement trying to put out this fire.
    gingrich sounds good to me.

  • Vic - 16 years ago

Glen, I am glad someone else did the math. I have had several people send me the same e-mail in the past day or two and I am amazed they don't even bother to check the math before sending it forward.

  • Sandy Douglas - 16 years ago

Why do you think the American public can blindly disreguard the truth on voting matters that are on record in the Senate and House and continue to blame John McCain for all the problems we are facing today? Clearly Obama
hasn't helped that much to solve these problems.

  • Max Howard - 16 years ago

It worries me only in the fact that I seriously doubt the people who are really to blame will be held accountable as it is they who are the ones legislating the problem.

  • Glen - 16 years ago

I think Mr. David Fuller (comment above) should go to work on the financial crisis as a Democrat. That's $425 apiece, not $425,000.

  • Auto Industry Statistic - 16 years ago

Thanks Dolores Caraher (above comment). I too felt something was "off" about Paulson, but couldn't put my finger on it. He seems handsome, nice, a sweet family man who comes across as a good man. But...I couldn't shake this feeling. Something was OFF. Then, I find out this guy is worth hundreds of millions. And he ran Goldman when they had a huge % of subprime holdings. So, YES, I noticed he had little to say when he asked for billions, with no oversight, and quick! You know what? If he got this bail out, it would have artificially driven the market up so he could recover his wealth, he could transfer it (Jim Cramer said today the ultra wealthy are pulling money out and buying treasury bonds), and WE foot the bill. What a crook! Hey, Paulson, go call up Kwame Kilpatrick. You guys are two of a kind. I want to see Paulson investigated. Thanks Greta for being brave, having Gingrich on and uncovering the truth. I KNEW there was something more we weren't being told. God Bless America, all of us.

  • Paula from Bullhead City - 16 years ago

This nation needs a Constitutional Amendment prohibiting any member of Congress from adding anything to a bill containing one item. This could be called "The Clean Bill Act" or "No Pork Act." This bailout bill started at 3 pages and is now over 100 pages??? Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Barry Obama are all three drooling to get their hands on that $700 Billion plus.
And the Treasury Secretary and head of the Fed both knew this was imminent, as well as the head of the SEC. They should be fired and Frank, Dodd and Obama should be investigated. AND HOW DARE FANNIE MAE AND FREDDIE MAC take MY tax dollars and contribute to a particular political party. Someone needs to investigate that. I believe heads should roll. And I'm ill watching Obama talking like he has nothing to do about any of this. Just check out all of the pork he's requested be included, @2,210,800.00 in the fiscal 2008 federal budget. He's just drooling over this with his nose up in the
air like he knows it all. He knows Diddely. I know more about this economy than he does. Ask him what M1 is. The government quit publicizing this economic indicator. Our printing presses are already work 48 hours a day 21 days a week printing worthless cash. We need to have a Washington Tea Party and get rid of all the porkers. As soon as the Democrats took over Congress our country has gone to hell in a handbasket (and there's plenty of Republican porkers too and John McCain and Sarah Palin will get rid of them). Rome and the US are not too far apart in the issue of demise.

I think newt in on the money- I thought it was just me thinking that paulson should go - there is that certain look you get in your eyes when you have become obsessed with greed and power- obama has that look- obama /paulson is the latest ticket- paulson should be fired as well as pelosi and her crew-

you know, the longer she keeps the bill ridiculous, the higher the polls go for obama- unreal huh, anything we can do?

  • ANN Prestridge - 16 years ago

Yes, I am worried. I have been worried for fifteen years. I predicted this fifteen years ago when Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac gave loans to people with bad credit records. AND, the CEOs were African-American. All large cities that have failed to thrive or failed altogether, were under the leadership of African-Americans. Graft, corruption, nepotism, theft, fraud and other things, caused it.

  • Pauline - 16 years ago

Newt is the way to go! He seems to be the only stable person in this mess. I have been in my own financial crisis for the past year. No one has bailed me out but myself and hard work. By the way I am $200 below the poverty level and a taxpayer. It seems these people who carry $100 bills for change should be able to do the same.

  • Di Liongson - 16 years ago

"Pelosi" is wrong for calling those who voted "no" for the bail out as "unpatriotic". Those "PATRIOTIC" Republicans including those 94 democrats who voted "NO" are definitely protecting the interest of the majority of the american people who do not believe in this bail-out plan.

  • Melvin - 16 years ago

Thanks Greta. Newt is right on the mark. Please do all you can to get someone or anyone too listen and heed his advice. My church and I am sure many more like it has ask us to pray for our nation, and our political leaders. These days of late are bleak and worrisome, this is not a time for politcal one upsmanship. Please let our political leaders know how we feel. Thanks Greta and God Bless you and yours.

  • Denise - 16 years ago

While I understand that preventing collapse of our of economy (as well as the world economy) is the priority above all else, I have to ask the obvious and simple question.........
Why aren't those responsible for this "situation" (and I only call it that because I cannot use the four letter word that is appropriate in this email) contributing financially to the solution????????????????

Although simplistic, I think the American People would all feel more comfortable with ANY bill that was passed if it included a demand that the MILLIONS of dollars these "people" (again not the most appropriate reference to this group) are used as part of repayment of the money they stole from us - stole IS the appropriate word

It is the working people who use their $30-$50K salaries to feed their families who are suffering, not the millionaires who employ them. The severance packages and bank accounts of these "People" should be seized and distributed to the employees they stole from.

  • vIRGINIA mENZEL - 16 years ago

    Greta,
Thanks for getting the truth out there. That bill was a SELL OUT. We need the safeguard legislation put in place after The Great Depression which Clinton removed. We need hold on capitol gains taxes and a hold on corporate taxes which dampens growth. We need legislation before throwing good money after bad. We need Mcain to open his mouth and remind voters of the Democratic Barney Frank's push to force loans to people who can't afford loans. Mccain needs to tell voters how he tried to warn voters of impending catastrophy.I hope there is video showing him making these warnings. Obama should be forced to prove he also gave warnings.Mccain has lots of truthful factual ammunition that shows he has experience while Obama is a talking uit who just parrots what his bunch of crooks feed him.
He has to win this election because Obama supporters are desperate to win so they can usher in socialism. Such desperation is pushing their lies and unholy attacks on Mccain and Palin. Palin's light exposes the black hearts of women libbers. Evil always hates virtue. They are like Dracula flailing in the presence of the light of the Cross.

  • Vic - 16 years ago

The economy is fine. It is the crooks in Congress and running the financial institutions who created the mess and are now making this an international crissis. None of the bums who created the mess have been removed from office and now they want more money and control of the spending. We are all idiots if we allow it.

  • Cynic - 16 years ago

Yes, I am worried. Who's going to bail me out? My taxes are too high and I can't afford them anymore! Thanks to these dopes who bought houses they never should have and the greedy loan officers and mortgage brokers, I can't even sell my house! Vote all the bums out of Washington. Let's start electing "normal" people who don't have an entitlement mentality and a "right to own a home" brain. You have a right to own what you can afford to buy from the salary you earn!

  • Barbara - 16 years ago

I'm more worried about the terrorists that find their way into the US and plan the demise of this country. We wouldn't have any financial worries if these lunatics destroy our land. McCain has a handle on our security. With him in the White House, we would eventually work out the financial end. At least we would have the strength of his experience. With Obama we could be financial stable without a country to spend our money.

  • Arlene Capper - 16 years ago

Greta, There is so much that seems smelly about the whole situation. I think the guilty ones and the priviledged ones that caused the crisis should be made to pay. Also, we should have an alternative to "texting" our vote on the debates. Lots and lots of senior citizens were unable to express our opinions on the debate because we do not text. That seemed unfair. Can you please help us so we can vote on the next debate? Please? Thank you.

  • Margery - 16 years ago

We ought to be debating not some bailout, not some so-called rescue plan, but whether or not we are in fact as a people, ready to accept socialism as our form of government. But since we have amongst our political elites so few voices—though some have been raised – that will tell the truth, the debate is not centering on these realities, but instead it is centering on a bunch of buzz words that act as if this is once again the government doing something for the rest of us, when in point of fact, all it is is the consolidation of a form of government that will leave the American people out in the cold, bearing the yoke, but no longer having the power to do anything that really determines the destiny of their country.

Is this Bush's Plan for the Amero Money?

  • David Fuller - 16 years ago

I saw this interesting letter come across my desk and thought this would be something to consider.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hi Pals,

I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.

Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.

To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00.

My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.

Of course, it would NOT be tax free.

So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.

Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes.

That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.

But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in thei r pocket.

A husband and wife has $595,000.00.

What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?

Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved.

Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads

Put away money for college - it'll be there

Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs.

Buy a new car - create jobs

Invest in the market - capital drives growth

Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves

Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else

Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling
out a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed
by one of our candidates for President.

If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen
    18+!

As for AIG - liquidate it.

    Sell off its parts.

Let American General go back to being American General.

    Sell off the real estate.

Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't.

Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work."

But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!

How do you spell Economic Boom?

I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion

We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC

And remember, The Birk plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

    Kindest personal regards,

    Birk

    T. J . Birkenmeier, A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Republic

PS: Feel free to pass this along to your pals as it's either good for a laugh or a tear or a very sobering thought on how to best use $85 Billion!!

I'm afraid we, as a society, have turned the "American Dream" into an expectation rather than the privilege it is and was intended to be. It's too bad we as individuals fall into the same greedy behavior as wall street. It is time for the citizens of this great nation to take a long look at themselves and begin the weening process. I'm 79 years old and have invested in the market all my life. I feel I will not have time left in my life to regain the value in my portfolio that would have sustained me when I most need it.....but I intend to hang in there.

“You are a den of vipers and thieves. I intend to rout you out, and by the eternal God, I will rout you out.”

Today I turn over my space to Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, who said these fiery words to a delegation of bankers in 1832:

“Gentlemen, I have had men watching you for a long time, and I am convinced that you have used the funds of the bank to speculate in the breadstuffs of the country. When you won, you divided the profits amongst you, and when you lost, you charged it to the bank. You tell me that if I take the deposits from the bank and annul its charter, I shall ruin ten thousand families. That may be true, gentlemen, but that is your sin! Should I let you go on, you will ruin fifty thousand families, and that would be my sin! You are a den of vipers and thieves. I intend to rout you out, and by the eternal God, I will rout you out.”

From FOX news internet. Its right on target now as well.

Come on people wake up!!! If we sit back and say it isn't our problem and do nothing, (quickly) we are going to wake up and have no jobs, no money, and no stability on so many levels. Our money will be worthless. Ok even if you don't own stocks or 401ks you do have families!! It will be better to help with this bail out than put our families through a depression. Most of us do not know how it was in the thirties so it is very difficult to comprehend the wide spread effects of the situation at hand. In one since we are bailing out our selves from the position of certain danger of losing life as we know it. This we definatly can't afford.
Why are critisizing a man (McCain) for this busted attempt and not Obama? McCain is working for us whether there is co-operation from everyone else or not he is working! Obama is simply showing up! He needs to jump in and Quit trying to play a safe card to be able to say he didn't do it. We need someone who can get something done. Is This how he plans to run the WHITE HOUSE just be present in it? Come on we need help here.

I was a Democrat and became a Republican with Reagan and have been a registered independent for 16 years.

Both parties are heavily populated with egocentric fools. I am so sick of partisan politics I would love to fire all of them and start over. I don't give a damn about party politics. I am concerned about our economy and reestablishing respect for our country in the global community.

The speaker should be ashamed of her petty comments during such an important and politically sensitive debate. Her ego simply got ahead of her and demonstrates why she should not be in a leadership position. The Republicans on the other hand should be bigger than the speaker. The Administration has been and continues to be run by a house of fools.

I am sick of the far left rhetoric and the moralistic "fundamentalist" and fear based arrogance of the conservative base in Congress. The vast majority of Americans are tired of this crap. There was a time when I could support McCain as an honest man, but his strategist have repeatedly taken him down the path of all the things he objected. He lives and speaks in the past, does not understand the economy and has simply lost credibility with me.

Obama is a leader, he listens, and is respectful. He stays above the crap the McCain strategist keep pulling. And poor Sarah, she is simply in way, way, way, over her head. She would be laughable if it wasn't such a terrible joke for Americans.

I am sorry, both parties are terribly wrong but in this instance I am voting for Leadership, and will vote for Obama.

Please? Thank you.

    Fire Mr Paulson now.
Suspend, Dodd, Franks, Rangel and who ever else should of done something about this but chose for self gain not to. They need to go to federal Prison.
Nancy Pelosi either needs put in front of a fire squad or hung for treason--SHE SOLD US OUT TO SOMEONE IN THE MIDDLE EAST--THIS IS VERY EASY TO SEE--IF REPUBLICANS WERE REALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS PELOSI AND REID WOULD BE BURNING THEIR BUTTS AT THE STAKE.
PELOSI AND PAULSON ARE WAY TO CHUMMY.
WAY PAST COINCIDENTAL THAT WHEN OBAMA LOST AND FELL BEHIND THEY PULLED MORE CRIMINAL TRICKS BY TAKING OUR COUNTRY DOWN AND OUR HEALTH AND WELFARE FOR pELOSI AND THE POWER , GREED MONGERS.
gET RID OF THE CAPITAL GAINS TAX.

  • Doris - 16 years ago

I don't know why the President does not do anything on his own. If he took Newt Gingrich's comments to heart, he probably would solve this problem. If in 2 wks, it didn't work, then do something else. I would have Nancy Pelosi get on a fast boat to nowhere because that's where she belongs. The position she has & the power it gives her has gone to her head. As for Paulson, he should be fired.....but the President does not have the guts to do that. I have awakened at 5 AM in tears and wondered how "we" the forgotten man, will pay this tremendous debt. I don't trust our Government anymore. Once politicians get into office, they forget words like integrity, honesty and value....and that they work for "us" the forgotten man. I could go on and on because I feel very strongly that our politicians have forgotten us!!! Sad to say

  • What/who Really Created This - 16 years ago

Is the nation's financial crisis rooted in the Clinton years? Is the crisis amplified by the far left's drive for socialism?

  • Fred Newbrough - 16 years ago

I'm not worried. I would like to have a house but I knew I couldn't afford one so I didn't try to get a loan I knew I would place my family at risk. I certainly don't want my tax dollars to go for balling out Wallstreet or Mainstreet both screwed up. I screwed up when I was younger and it was the pain of dealing with my credit problems that made me so wary of going for high risk loans.

It also interests me that most banks 92% of them are not involved in the subprime market. Credit is still flowing from these banks for those with good and moderately good credit. This hysteria from Paulson and the President seems in tent on making sure high risk credit remains available and subprime loans will continue to be granted. Well isn't that what got us into this mess?
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were government creations. The Democrat congress, individuals like Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Maxine Waters are on record as far back as 2004 saying there was no need for more regulations requiring stricter standards and oversight when granting high risk loans. John McCain sponsored a bill along with Republican colleges as recently as 2006 to reform both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac but it was brought down by Democrats on the party line.

What I want is these people who opposed reform to lose their committee chairmanships. I don't want Barney Frank whose gay lover Herb Moses headed up Fannie Mae during the build up to this mess running the effort to fix this. This is crazy. These politicians tried their best including President Bush to applaud these bad loans because it got poor and less fortunate into houses.
Well I don't applaud any of them. They are no better than the predatory lenders who issued the loans and the idea that we are going to give Paulson a blank check to go buy up bad loans betrays a lack of realism on the part of these people. They should all step down and in a better world they'd find themselves drug into the streets by fire light of torches to be hung for their audacity and arrogance.

I'm not one bit afraid. I come from a linage that knows how to survive and I think it is about time we get back to the basics and learn to live within ours means. The cost of Education is inflated, the cost of housing is inflated, the amount of personal credit is inflated, the size of government is inflated and it is long past the time to pop the bubbles of those who live beyond their means and the pitiful sickly creatures we call leaders who see no end to their ability to call on the tax payer to reward them for consistent failure.

I'm looking forward for things to get real because as the economy adjusts back reality so will governments across this land be forced to do the same.
Tax revenues will contract forcing much need cuts throughout this nation. The power of socialism will shrink out necessity and the politicians who seek to spend their way to glory will find their pockets much lighter which is always a good thing. They screwed and it is time to deal with pain. There is no easy solution. Most of us will be fine. Some individuals and companies who got themselves into messes will have to face a harsh reality but America will survive, the dollar will be stronger, our disrespectful allies and enemies will find their place as their economies fall even further than ours. We are Atlas and it is long overdue that we shrugged.

  • Dustin Pepos - 16 years ago

Was it worth risking the possibility of another circumstance comparable to the great depression, losing things we have long worked for? Our leaders were not looking out for the common citzen when they shot down the bailout bill. The key to rescuing the economy is to first pass a bailout bill, once the economy is stabilized it is time for more goverment regulation. This country could be in serious trouble if some sort of rescue plan does not pass; if this become the case brace yourselves my friends because we will have some hard times ahead. Then it will not be about democrats and republicans we will all be in it together.

  • Big Lo in K-Town - 16 years ago

I would give anything within reason if the Republican Party had pushed for Newt for President. He is head over hills of all candidates. No Democrat would stand a chance in a debate with him. I am like a lot of you, why doesn't George W. listen to Newt's logic and quit being so dam'n dumb when it comes to economic decisions. There are things that can be done tomorrow morning without any type interference from the west coast witch, or the wimp Reid from AZ, or the Gay boy Barney...

we the people thank newt gingrich for his wisdom of "mark to market" which by the way would work but, why is he not telling john mccain???

  • Aubrey Crowe - 16 years ago

Seems that everyone is overlooking who would be administering the paper that Paulson would have bought with the 700 billion. Iy would not have been the government. Oh No!!! They would have outsorced it. Guess who??? The very same people that screwed every thing up to begin with.

  • Elba Joyce - 16 years ago

I agree with Bill Goodwin from Alaska. Throw them all out and draft Newt Gingrich
for president. He makes more sense than all the rest of them put together because he speaks from the platform of knowledge.

  • V Forbes - 16 years ago

The Fear Mongers are loose. There is only a loss if you sell. The market is only down 7% for goodness sake. There may need to be something done, but it should not be done in fear. Much thought and consideration needs to be given. Economists should be consulted and the government should not become bigger in the meantime. Nor should it be involved in free market anymore.

  • Kaky H - 16 years ago

I called the Whitehouse today and suggested that the President ask Newt Gingrich to present his plan that he had talked about on TV last week that he thought would solve this crisis. After listening to him tonight, I think the Pesident should ask to suspend the negotiations for now and try the Market to Market approach that Newt talked about tonight.

I like Sarah Palin, but Newt would make a great Vice President. We need a real leader.

If family households all over America made critical decisons like Washington politicians do, our divorce rate would be 90% instead of 50%... I don't worry about the financial crisis in America because I have no control over it . I do have control of my vote in November....
When I look at the choices for President, I relate the decision based on winning a high school state tournament. Do I put in the game my experienced senior quarterback or do I try to win with a freshman quarterback who says he can win the game but has never been on the field.
I CHOOSE THE UPPERCLASSMEN.. Doesn't Sen. McCain deserve to be on the field. Let the freshman (Obama) wait for his turn when he gets more time on the field... I trust John McCain's integrity !!!!

Our country's economic health has been and is today one of the key componets of our continued socitey, so that does not represent CHANGE when considering history. What does represent CHANGE is our country's culture change represented by those that elevate economics over more important issues like the decline of our moral fabric.

  • Linda - 16 years ago

I wish McCain would get Newt Gingrich in on his "run" and get the economic
advice he needs. Newt is one of the smartest persons and I would hope he'd
be tapped for a part of the cabinet. If McCain doesn't listen to Newt or some
other person like him, he isn't going to win the presidency. I sure don't want
a left wing presidency, house and senate. That would be a crisis!! And I agree with "believer" because I too, am not worried, it will be fine and every-
thing will go well. To God be the glory! Too many put their trust in government and you see where that gets us?

  • Jeff - 16 years ago

Anyone who is from 0 to 5 years away from retirement, as I am, has got to be extremly worried about this financial crisis. Confidence in our system must be restored in order for the retirement programs that most of us have worked all of our lives for to be viable. If they are not, we will not be able to retire. If we don't retire, there will be a huge increase in unemployment as there will be no jobs for the millions of new workers who enter the workplace every year to go to work.

  • T. Farmer - 16 years ago

Let the free market run its' course. We will survive. Those who are most worried are the same folks who got us in this mess. I agree with a previous writer who said to use Newt Gingrich's plan, if there must be a "bailout". I would add language to the bill and require a sign-off by Obama and McCain that regardless of the election results, a team of prosecutors will be turned loose on Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Wall Street to investigate and subsequently prosecute any criminal activity lending itself to this financial mess. They should start with Raines and Johnson, both former Fannie Mae CEO's and current Obama advisors who ran Fannie into the ground, cooked the books to hide their criminal activity and walked away with golden parachutes...Raines collected $90 million dollars. He should bypass the white collar prison country club at Pensacola and go directly to Leavenworth. Try one year for each million he stole from the U.S. taxpayers. Sounds fair to me.

Is gingrich the only one that knows about an alternative solution? why isn't anyone else yelling at the top of there soap box? why are they letting paulson do what he wants to do and get away with it? He must be greedy beyond our wildest imagination. doesnt anyone in the democratic party care about the american people? this is not about helping out all your friends it is supposed to be about helping our financial instiuions. They must be held accountable and be responsible. We the people would be held responsible if we tried to do this. this is so very evil not to care about the american people. take all the pork and fat back off of the bill and do the right thing congress. nancy pelosi is so blind sided she can't even function right. If they pass this loaded bill God help America. One man need not have all that power, and Paulson is not that man.

If legalized gambling was not available via Wall Street, there would be no problem. Stocks rated by opinion or intuition rather than financial fact; coin
flipping. Too bad. But, we are over-reacting to this temporary situation and
    should not make it political.

  • Lisa - 16 years ago

Before the Great Depression we referred to this as a "Panic".
Truman, Kennedy, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Bush (1st) have all proposed actions to price controls, tax cuts and spending programs to help recessions.
All this is new territory and really need to believe in what we are hearing in order to justify spending money that we don't have.
We need to fix the blame.
We will all lose and have to deal with the loss.
I am tired of hearing "Lets just fix it!"
Maybe we can't and we need to wait for the dust to settle.

My family has fought in every war of this country from the French Indian, Revolution, Civil War both sides, Spainish-American, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and now the War on Terrorism. I mention this because it makes me angry at YOUR govt for dragging my country down. What is it really coming to? Is it time for us God fearing, gun toting country folks to take back our country by force. I only now that this is not why I spent 20 years in the military for... Semper Fi!!!

I was going to email you even before NEWT came on and ask you to pursue this in the interest of the PEOPLE. We need to call this a high priority before we go on with any plan because we have been his sheep and he has the shears after us. I think it looks like an OBAMA -PAULSEN ticket.

My husband and I have been in the real estate business for over 40 years and the first thing my husband said when Paulson preposed this bill was exactly what Newt said to do and then things would work out.

Eliminate mark to market and watch the bleed slow significantly! Newt is right, but President Bush's' support of his Treasury Secretary means both have to go---the Paulson bill is beyond stupid when viewed through the American way. Call your rep in Congress and oppose the bailout vigorously---Bush and the leadership of both houses on both sides of the isle should resign---they have failed the nation.

I am flabbergasted at how so many people could be so blind. How can Obama's poll numbers be up when the poor decisions made by our Democrat lawmakers put us on the road towards this economic mess back in the Clinton era?? Not to mention the fact that two of Obama's economic advisers are the former CEO's of the bankrupt Lehman's Brothers and Fannie Mae... All I can say is... God help us all if Obama wins.

  • scott schilling - 16 years ago

I say that it is such a obvios mis-use of elected power to put us in the current state that we as public should give elected officials in Washington not a minute past October 15th at midnight to correct the situation. If they fail to do so they should not be allowed to seek an elected office ever again during their lifetime. All incumbents will be asked to leave office during this election as well. I believe even further any common person who lost their hard investment for their future should have the right to enter into a class action suit against Washington to recover there loss. This is a unacceptable situation for the public to be in so that greed can expand for the very few!!!!!!!

A bailout that does nothing to help the taxpayers, and other alternatives that were not looked at is not what the People want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Paulson needs to be removed. It is time those on Capitol Hill realize we "The People" are capable of understanding what stakes are. The Democrats want a quick push through...well I am not willing to put 700 Billion in the hands of those that abused and misused the business they were responsible for being care takers of. The only thing they did was abuse and reward the CEO's with huge amounts that the majority of us can only dream of....Why not go with the suspending the mark on the markets as suggested by Newt Gingrigh...or the idea of insuring instead of bailing out these companies as suggested by Gov. Huckabee. The most of us have to work. These companies can work as well. Congress can stay and work! Listening to Nancy Polosi should be some punishment. She is such a joke.

Worried no, concerned yes. I believe if McCain had been elected President in the first place we would not be in this shape now. I think that Congress works for the people and that is what they are trying to do. Let's have faith in them to do their job and get us back on track. Let's pray for all of them working on this plan to do the right thing for the people and all Americans and to put alll Americans and country first.

The Democrats so disrespect us they stand there and lie right to our faces, if we don't stop train from gaining steam we will win up the the government we deserve!

Where is the passion McCAIN!!! You are in the fight of our free lives!!

Im 18 and I am worried. Being a current college student and being the average income family, we have debt. We have debt from two in college, and just trying to break even. I do not think the American tax paying people should have to bail out the corporates for their greed and misguidance of their companies; but the American economy is broken. I agree with McCain, it's not time to fix the blame, it's time to fix the problem. Although we can't sit back and watch, because the stability of our entire economy is at risk. We need to take action now.

Nobody bailed me out when I had to file bankruptcy. Nobody loaned me money because I had health problems and couldn't pay my bills. Nobody gave me money after I was severed from my job because of those health problems and couldn't get unenployment because I worked for a church. The CEO's who walked away rich beyond all imaginations need to be investigated, taken to court if they "cooked the books" as many have claimed, and then sent to jail until they pay back every penny they stole. This includes the Congress who took money as well. Better yet--give the money to the people who have lost their jobs because of jobs going overseas or were driven out business because of the high cost of oil. I think charity should begin on Main Street NOT Wall Street.

  • connie - 16 years ago

I think the republicans did the right thing in not passing this bill. I think Paulson and his cronies need to be fired and just let the financial mess start to straighten itself out. Paulson was feathering his own nest and the dems liked it that way so they could spend my money however they wanted. Obama is linked to this mess in one way or another mark my words. Oh and by the way did he actually vote or just pass like he always does so there won't be any accountability? et always wanted to PHONE home! Obama always wants to phone in his answer or just sit on the sidelines to see where the mess is and go the other way!!! Wake up america!!! At least McCain is not afraid to make people mad in his own party or the other side. He's not perfect, but he is who I want answering the phone at 3 am. We know Obama won't answer it.!!!
