Yes, a redesign is in order.

US money is stuck in the 20th century. It looks out of date, and is not that hard to forge compared with multicoloured money.

One option would be to replace the bills individually, 1 at a time instead of all together. We did that in the UK, getting rid of our old £20 note and replacing it with a beautiful modern design that was more tamper proof. A few years ago we replaced the £10 note too.

It would also save the USA money to switch to coinage for the $1 and $2. Coinage lasts longer in circulation and is just better. We have pound coins in the UK from the late 70s, early 80s, still doing the rounds. You can't do that with paper money.

Only a fool replaces their heritage with new designs. Why should we change or remove the symbols that represent our Nation?

Maybe we should do more important things like hold leaders in Washington accountable for improving things, and not wasting time on replacing our history with their own faces. What did Obama or any other "so-called" leader in Washington do to improve things lately (white, black, yellow, I don't care).

    Did they?
    Screw up health care? yes
    Screw up your mortgage? yes
Take a ton of vacations at our expense? yes
Get voted out soon? God I freaking hope so!

I used to be a Dem, and I thought Obama had something positive to offer, but all I found was a spineless greedy person who could care less how much taxes we pay.

If you think public health care reform is not going to kill your wallet just ask the Europeans. Big government is a backwards movement that costs way too much. We had one of the best health care systems in the world, and now it will be filled with malpractice.

Want to fix things, give the illegals SSN's but lock down the borders before doing do and keep it secret.

Make the now legal bastards pay taxes instead of consuming all our resources. As for the welfare crowd, put thier lazy butts to work instead of giving them food stamps. Hell, make them work in a daycare center and watch all their spawn while the others work and earn incomes.

Give the ignorant an education and let them contribute back to society. Stop taxing the hell out of us and wondering why the economy sucks.

As for China, stop buying all their dollar store junk and causing the world to wobble on its axis due to poor weight distribution. - Some remember when China owed us money....

Idiots in Congress, do your jobs or get out!!!

Given how dumb the American people are, a $1 banknote redesign would cause problems. People would be whining because they did not know that the new and old banknotes are both spendable despite having different designs. Eventually, the new bank note would be prevalent. However, some moron will burn or throw in the garbage the old $1 notes not realizing that the old note is still valid. This story will be played ad naseum on the various news channels. Of course, the dolts will whine that there should have been more education about the new, designed note.

When dealing with the American people in the sick culture that prevails today, keeping matters simple for the 99+% of the dumbells that are the American people. What the hell happened to this country that defeated two of the world's most powerful military forces in history in 3 years-9 months that ended in September 1945, but today, the usual denizen could not find water if floating in the middle of the ocean? The conclusion is that when dealing with dumb, keep it at the dumbell level, namely, as basic as possilbe.

Listen closely: the design of currency is NOT a joke or a casual subject for popular voting; nor is it a contest to see whose face goes on the bill. Currency is designed to subliminally enhance the perceived value of the bill. Experts choose graphics that not only help defy counterfeiting, but add a sense of power and value to the bill. The dollar bill of the United States of America is not a comic book, nor an ad for a latest fad. The faces on our currency are those of true heroes of the United States. That does not include Sarah Palin !!!
I suggest that the U.S. Mint employ designers who know what they are doing. If there is a need for redesign, which personally I doubt (I think we need MORE stability, not less), it should be done by experienced people who understand the consequences of what they are doing.
We are not talking about democracy or the right to choose here. We are talking about the basic image of American financial power; and that needs proper expertise.

Get rid of the $1 and $2 bills. Canada, Australia, and New Zealand use coinage for the $1 and $2 banknote denominations. There is an abundance of $1 coins, especially since the hideously designed presidential $1 coins have been released since 2007. Additionally, a $2 coin could also be minted and distributed.
The $5 banknote would be the lowest banknote denomination. It could be redesigned to show the Mt. Rushmore effigies that would include Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln so that these presidents are still honored. Of course there would be the added effigy of Theodore Roosevelt.

No way should we change the dollar bill. We should not do away with the man who worked hard and was creating
A country under God for wich we should believe and work to make this a better country and cut out all the crime and other bad things that is going on.
We don't need to spend money on redesining money, when we can't pay our bills
. This seems to me to forget the prisedent's that were here before ,just to get this president's pitcher on the money, for which is wrong. What is this designer after?
So instead of doing this ,lest work and use this money to make a better America for which all can be proud of..

Replacing George Washington on the dollar bill with anyone would be an affront to the man who won our independence and doing so with Barrack Obama is nuts. Does anyone in this country know anything about our history. How could anyone equate him with any of our founding fathers or great leaders of out country since him? He has been president for a little over a year and a half. What has he done to qualify him for being on anything except for his ability to make idiots think he is the promised messiah? What is the matter with us?

Stupid idea, just another jerk trying to get his name noticed. Waste of money, which we certainly can't afford at this time. We have the best images on the bills now that we could have, besides who gives a crap what the rest of the world thinks about the design of our money, They all fight like crazy to get all of it they can...

  • Stephanie - 14 years ago

I cannot believe that currently the vote on this site is roughly 78% for this dumb idea. This country is in deep doo doo
and somebody thinks it is a good idea to waste OUR TAXPAYER dollars on this. Does this person have a government job??? ANYBODY, who actually thinks that this will do ANYTHING to strenghten the economy or help to get this country back to the country financially it was not to long ago, really needs to make an appointment with a psychiatrist.
I imagine Europe would like to have the money wasted in the implementing of their currency change back. There are a ton of dumb ideas out their and this is one of the biggest...a total waste of time and energy.....In my opinion, the majority of the people on this site voting FOR this stupid idea, must also be the ones who voted in this horrible government many months ago.....

“We want to rebrand the U.S. dollar, rebuild financial confidence and revive our failing economy,” he says. Really?!! We will do that in the election process, not by spending more taxpayer dollars in our 'failing' economy.
For change sake? Give me a break.

Whatever is done with the money it is NOT going to help our declining living standard.

  • karen m ledington - 14 years ago

I think that the money should be redesigned and changed and everyone should have to exchange all their money for the new money, because there is a lot of money that is hidden or lost that can not be accounted for. It would make our money much stronger if there was an actual count on all money. It doesn't matter what it looks like, it just needs to be changed.

  • Jackie - 14 years ago

I noticed that nowhere on any of these designs is the phrase "In God We Trust". Therefore I see this as just another one of the governments ploys to take the phrase that has been on our money for years and just get rid of it. I also do not agree with putting Obama on the One Dollar Bill. I have nothing against him, but there is a reason George Washington was put on that bill, and that's not something we should ignore. All those figures were selected because they stood for something that helped make our country the great country that it is today. If we replace them just to redesign some money, we may as well be throwing away everything they stood for. That is a great thing to consider when thinking about voting for this change. Plus, I see no problem with the way our money looks right now. It's not like the design is affecting the performance of the money. I don't think we should waste our country's money to make the bills look prettier when there are far more important things we could be using the money for.

    I agree that change

  • John - 14 years ago

You morons who say (you can't really believe) that this stupid progam will do anything other than advance mindless conversation should all leave our once-great country and settle in Europe or the middle east. Please get the fcuk out and leave us alone so we can repair the damage done by idiot elite academics...

Obama one the dollar bill is like me designing money by wiping my arse.

  • tim stone - 14 years ago

this is the stupidest idea I've heard of in a long time. Who is the idiot that came up with this wast of time and money. Changing the appearande of our currenncy wont chang the economy, that will take getting washington to stop spending and cutting the defiiciet. Like thats ever going to happen!!!!

  • Lisa Allen-Cruz - 15 years ago

I agree that change for change sake is not right, therefore, I don't see the reason for changing the face of our money. Everything that America is about has revolved around our limited history (compared to Europe), why do we want to give up our tradition?

Too many of us have already given up traditional morals and values, which is a reason for our current situation, so does that mean that we abandon them completely and everything that might remind us of what we let go? I think we fight to keep the little that we have left and find something better to do with our time and money.

Donatella, Change fir change's sake is the stuff that Pol Pot's, Stalin's and Castro's dreams were made of. I don't see the changes that take place in Europe to be very positive; sagging economies, increasing tensions regarding immigration, future demographic crisis, diminishing quality of health care, and return of nationalism. You guys keep changing; let America be America.

    Hi readers,
it hasn't been easy to imagine Euro instead of Lira here in Italy, before 2000. I think the same about the rest of Europe. But now Euro is our money, it's part of our lives. We had to accept not only a new image, but also a new way to calculate the value of each coin and bill! And a new brotherhood with other European people. A real revolution.

People (and human brain) is able to change. I am changing person even when I feel pain or fear. You are the same as I am. Recently USA gave the World the best lesson about the possibility to change. It'a a perfect moment to refresh a so strong symbol of Usa culture and concrete like.
    ciao! Donatella
